The Diversity Learning Series, Thomas Page McBee

Thomas Page McBee will be coming to the University of Virginia to participate in the “Excellence Through Diversity Distinguished Speaker Series” where he will talk about media narratives of masculinity, trans-ness, and the responsibility we all have to live intentionally in our genders, whatever they are.

Thomas Page McBee was the “masculinity expert”  for VICE and has written the columns “Self-Made Man” for the Rumpus and “The American Man” for Pacific Standard. His book, Man Alive: A True Story of Violence, Forgiveness and Becoming a Man was named a best book of the year by NPR Books, BuzzFeed and Publisher’s Weekly and his essays and reportage  have appeared in the New York Times, Playboy, TheAtlantic.com, Glamour and Salon.  Along with being an author and regular contributor on gender issues he is also the first transgender man to fight at Madison Square Garden; the mini-documentary of this event–Fight Like a Man–stars McBee who also contributed to its multi-media content. He has a book about masculinity, Amateur, forthcoming on Scribner, and is an editor and the head of growth at the website Quartz.
