Moving Forward

Dear qMD,

I wanted to share with you all the kind words and support from Aimee Carter and the Alumni Association:

We, at the Medical Alumni Association, are here for you all.  Please let me know if qMD is having any events for which you need alumni or financial support. We’re committed to helping!  I know this week is stressful and you are all hurting. We’re here to help.

On a personal note, yesterday I was so wrapped up in myself and my own kids safety, I forgot that I AM A MOM living in a community filled with other mom’s babies.  I want to help.  Derrick (my husband) and I have an open door policy, if one of you need a place to vent, eat a home cooked meal, see some crazy kids saying crazy stuff… whatever a student needs  – our doors are open.  We eat dinner as a family every night around 6 (except Monday and Wednesday, Derrick coaches basketball) and we’d love to have young, intelligent students break bread with us. PLEASE feel free to share this with other LGBTQ students. We live less than 2 miles from the school of medicine. It’ll never be fancy and I’ll not commit to having run the vacuum, but it’s a home I’m happy to share.

If ANY STUDENT needs a safe place to eat Thanksgiving or Christmas or ANY OTHER DAY of the year dinner, I have a mom army ready to feed you all. Honestly. My mother just went and bought a 22 lb turkey in hopes that any of you will join us and other women in Charlottesville have offered the same.

We are not alone going forward.  Oregon just elected the first LGBTQ-identifying governor.  If we’re lucky, Pat McCrory will lose in North Carolina.  I encourage all of you to continue working on the things you can change.  Consider volunteering with the Eliminate the Hateevents next week.  Find other ways to stand up for what you believe in.  Write letters or emails to elected officials.  Support each other and take care of your selves.
I’ll be traveling for interviews much of the coming months, but I am always available if you need anything.  I’d love to plan more events for us going forward, so if you guys have any ideas, please let me know.  We can make it happen.

Brian Wakefield
